Seeking Stillness

As I walk along the dusty track, I pass by many of the wicked and wild trees that have been decorating this small corner of the Gwydir Forest for a century or more. There are a handful of oaks but the majority of them here are silver birch trees that love these damp upland moorland environments. I’m just a tiny speck of dust beneath most of the trees, and, despite my hair being a little thinner in some places than it once was, one glance at their weathering bark makes me appreciate my youth. The young should respect their elders, so I pause for a moment to think about how little I know, and how much I still have yet to learn from them.

All of the nature photography within these pages was produce during 2021, and this zine tells the story of a year that changed me as a Nature photographer and human.

It features a series of short stories, a poem that I felt inspired to write whilst out in nature, and an insight into why I create and where my love of the trees and woodland was born.

There is nothing more satisfying for the soul than an early morning walk through a beautiful woodland at sunrise with the tranquil sounds of birdsong and the tap, tap, tapping of the woodpeckers guiding you safely through the trees. The damp, earthy aromas and beautiful vibrant colours through the autumn are a feast for our senses and only add to the welcoming sounds that the woodland has to offer.

This photograph was a result of months of connecting with this wonderful oak woodland here in mid Wales. I spent an estimated 100 hours in here throughout the course of the summer and autumn months. It was a fabulous place to spend my time and this photograph was a just reward for my efforts.

I walked innocently into one of Wales’ most beautiful and ancient oak woodlands, yielding my Stanley flask filled with coffee, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and my Canon 5D IV. As I closed The Fellowship of the Ring for the last time, mounted my flask back into the side pocket of my bag and withdrew my camera, my hands rose to the heavens as beams of soft, golden light shone down on me through the canopy. It was an enlightening moment in my photography journey so far.
